The early modern period was a time of great change and upheaval in Europe. The Renaissance and Reformation had challenged traditional beliefs and institutions, and the rise of new technologies and the expansion of trade had brought Europeans into contact with new cultures and ideas. These developments led to a profound transformation in the way that Europeans imagined the world around them.
In The Worldmakers: Global Imagining in Early Modern Europe, Jerry Brotton explores the ways in which Europeans' understanding of the world was shaped by their interactions with other cultures and by their own internal debates about religion, politics, and science. Through a wide-ranging examination of texts, images, and objects, Brotton shows how Europeans' global imagining was a complex and contested process that was constantly being revised and redefined.
One of the most important factors that shaped Europeans' global imagining was their encounters with the Americas. The discovery of the New World challenged Europeans' traditional beliefs about the world and its place in the universe. It also led to a new appreciation of the diversity of human cultures and the fragility of the natural world.
Another important factor that influenced Europeans' global imagining was the rise of science. The Scientific Revolution led to a new understanding of the physical world and the laws of nature. This new knowledge had a profound impact on the way that Europeans thought about their place in the universe and their relationship to the natural world.
The Worldmakers is a groundbreaking work that offers a new perspective on early modern Europe. Brotton's wide-ranging examination of texts, images, and objects provides a rich and nuanced understanding of the ways in which Europeans imagined the world around them. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of Europe, the history of science, or the history of global exploration.
